naamyam creative research.

2019 - 2021 | practice-based research

Naamyam, an important part of Cantonese cultural heritage, is a narrative singing tradition that was a popular form of vernacular entertainment in China's Canton region (of which Hong Kong is a part) during the 20th century. Led by cross-media artist Steve Hui, a team of artists from different disciplines delved into the history and tradition of Naamyam, looking for ways to bridge heritage with contemporary music practices. Participating artists had the opportunity to develop their works in this project over an extended period of time, taking part in in-depth theoretical and practical studies, field trips and experimentation workshops, culminating in the creation of new works from an interdisciplinary perspective.
From Autumn 2019 to Autumn 2021, the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble invited a group of renowned and passionate performers and researchers to a series of masterclasses and lecture demonstrations, where they shared knowledge and anecdotes about the cultural heritage that was once popular in Hong Kong.
